Mahnoor was on a train from Lake Como to Milan on April 16, when a group of college-age Italian girls began mocking her half-Chinese boyfriend and his family. The girls can be heard saying “Ni Hao” repeatedly while laughing out loud together.

Manhoor, who is Pakistani, posted the incident to her TikTok and strongly condemned the girls’ behavior. “Never in my life have I experienced such blatant racism,” she said in her caption. “I hope you Italians can find these girls and shame them. It was truly disgusting behavior and I hope they learn a lesson from this.”

I noticed these girls sitting across from us staring me down and laughing and speaking Italian. At first, I ignored it. Then I stared back at them. They didn’t stop so I made my bf aware, then took a nap. I woke up from the nap to them doing the same thing but more aggressively. I asked them, “Is there a problem?” They said, “No there isn’t a problem.” At that point they started saying “Ni hao!” in an obnoxious, racist, loud voice, along with other things in Italian I couldn’t understand. They continued getting more and more aggressive, laughing at and mocking us. Eventually, I started filming them. They were the most calm during the video but you can still hear them saying ni hao and get a vibe of their general attitude. Never in my life have I experienced such blatant racism. My boyfriend said the same thing. I expected better from the younger generation. After I shared this on IG, many of my Asian friends shared their stories of experiencing racism in Italy and Europe. America may have its race issues, but Europe is 20 years behind. I hope you Italians can find these girls and shame them. It was truly disgusting behavior and I hope they learn a lesson from this. People eventually did “find these girls.” The video quickly went viral, racking up 19.4 million views, and Manhoor re-posted it to her channel; this time, revealing the girls’ TikToks, Instagrams, and universities. “Let’s show them what happens to racists in 2023,” she said.

Understandably, viewers were outraged by the incident. “Such blatant racism,” one person commented. “The way everyone’s talking about mean girls, like no, call them what they are. They are racists.”

Since the video went viral, all three girls have either deleted their social media accounts or made them private, and Unicatt University, one of the girls’ schools, stated that it would be investigating the incident. The forceful social media response prompted one of the girls to message Mahnoor directly with an apology. Unfortunately, it seemed less than sincere.

“They saw what happened to lizard girl now they're scared it will happen to them as well,” one person commented, referencing an incident where “mean girls” at a baseball game were doxxed after appearing in the background of a TikTok.

Doxxing everybody who commits an offense on video is a dangerous precedent, but there is no question that these girls needed to face the consequences of their actions.

“Am I missing something?” one commenter asked. “Is there like a mean girl era going on?”
